Bayshore Street Racer Gets Prison
I’ve been a drag racer for most of my adult life. I’ve raced at over 200 mph in cars and on motorcycles. While it is very dangerous and exciting, it is also in a very controlled environment. An ambulance is on standby, there are no spectators wandering onto the track and the focus is on safety. When I moved to Tampa Bay about 6 years ago, I got an apartment close to the Gandy Bridge. I routinely heard motorcycles and cars racing late at night. Occasionally, I’d see a news story about a crash or death due to that racing. Tampa has the worst street racing problem I’ve ever seen. The biggest story in our city in a while is that of a young mom and her beautiful baby daughter that were killed when a young man careened into them during a street race along Bayshore three years ago. We all saw the news, the black Mustang GT with damage on the hood and fenders, the baby stroller in the street and the police cars. That terrible event saw some closure yesterday, when the driver who killed the two people was sentenced to 24 years in prison. Police say Cameron Herrin was going over 100 mph when he lost control and killed Jessica Reisinger-Raubenolt and her daughter, Lillian as they walked across the popular bayside street. The man Herrin was racing, John Barrineau, was sentenced to 6 years in prison. Since the crash, Bayshore has recieved more stoplights and a lower speed limit. Source: WFLA.com
