Florida Man Sentenced For Trying To Poison Ex with Ricin
It’s like a scene right out of Breaking Bad, except Walter White is being played by Florida man this time around. In a bizarre case of attempted poisoning, Florida man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for trying to kill his ex-partner with a toxin derived from castor oil beans called Ricin.
Authorities say 50-year-old Kississimee resident Kevin Dean Jones was investigated for production of ricin after a plot was uncovered involving his ex. Officers say Jones had a plan to produce ricin at home and then travel to his ex’s home to spray it into her face. Ricin is produced from castor oil beans and can kill a human in about 36 to 72 hours. The most famous example of ricin poisoning was seen in the hit Netflix show Breaking Bad With Bryan Cranston as Walter White, when Walter poisoned a woman by replacing the ricin in her sweetener. The woman breifly experienced flu-like symptoms before passing away shortly afterward. There is not currently an antidote for ricin poisoning, and treatment exists only of treating the symptoms brought on by the poisoning.
Investigators from the FBI were able to determine that Jones bought several items to make ricin from the internet. He also bought several water pistols that he planned to use to squirt the poison into the face of his intended victim. Once he had sprayed the woman’s face, he planned to go on a vacation, securing an alibi at the same time. Jones’ plan didn’t work out, as he was stopped while en route to the would-be victim’s home. When officers questioned Jones, he admitted to manufacturing ricin and his plan to travel to another state, spray the woman with the poison and head out on vacation. Officers confiscated several bottle of liquids from the scene, along with a water pistol. The substance was tested and proved to be ricin. Castor beans were also seized at the scene, as well as documents concerning ricin and about 200 rounds of ammunition. Further investigation discovered a cache of weapons and ammunition hidden in a storage locker rented by Jones.
Jones pleaded guilty to possessiung ricin and several firearms, which is illegal because he is a convicted felon. He was found guilty of all charges on Tuesday and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was also ordered to forfeit his guns. Source: WFLA.com
