2022 Python Challenge Winners
Hunters have only 10 days to hunt and remove as many Burmese pythons as they can get during Florida’s 10-day challenge. That means the Sunshine State’s legendary hunting season for the huge snakes brings the best of the best from across the globe. This year yielded more impressive results than ever. One hunter captured 28 snakes, while another caught this year’s largest python.
In all, over 1,000 hunters participated in the challenge this year. One of them came all of the way from Latvia. The 10-day challenge was invented to raise awareness of the invasive species in southwest Florida. So far, it has been a huge success, removing over 17,000 of the predatory snakes from the Everglades region of Florida. The winner of the competition this year was Matthew Concepcion, who successfully harvested 28 pythons. He will recieve a $10,000 cash prize for his efforts. In another category for largest python caught, Dustin Crum netted a $1,500 grand prize. His python measured 11 feet and 1/4 inch long. As impressive as that number is, bigger Burmese pythons have been captured in our state. The record so far is over 18 feet long. That Burmese python weighed 215 pounds and contained a partial deer carcass in its gut when it was killed earlier this year. Florida law allows the humane killing of pythons at any time on private land in our state with owner’s permission. The 10-day challenge happens every year and anyone is allowed to apply for the event. Source: WFLA.com
