Florida Aims To Stop Spam Calls
It’s becoming a regular thing, spam calls increase and the government announces a plan to deal with them. They slow down for a short time, and then they’re back. Repeat that cycle every year or so. It’sa starting to seem like something we’ll just have to live with. Now, Florida state government says it has a new plan. Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody held a press conference yesterday to announce the latest plan to protect us form scammers. It’s called the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force and it’s designed to deal with call centers outisde the United states exclusively. Attorneys General from all 50 states are on board.
To put things into perspective, Americans recieve 33 million calls EVERY DAY. Many of the callers pose as fake government agencies, such as the IRS or the Social Security Administration, to bilk elderly citizens out of billions of dollars annually. In 2021, the scams ripped off Americans for $29.8 billion dollars.
The task force aims to infiltrate and prosecute agencies that allow the scammers to exist and operate in the U.S. Suspicious companies here in America will be targeted and investigated. If they are found to be helping offshore robocall agencies, they will be prosecuted.
In the meantime, Floridians are being reminded that government agencies will never ask for gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency for any reason. READ THAT AGAIN.
Americans can sign up for the DO NOT CALL registry. The registry works in all 50 states, so you can tell your friends. Just Google DO NOT CALL REGISTRY. Florida residents have an additional resource avalable to them. Check with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The registry keeps you on the list indefinitely , so if youv’e done it before, you don’t need to do so again. The new task force aims to penalize scammers that ignore the registry. Source: WFLA.com
