Florida Trooper Who Crashed Into DUI Threat Last Year Will Start The Skyway Run This Year
It was the 6th of March, 2022. Thousands of runners were stretching and preparing for the Skyway 10k Run, while taking in a stunning view for the run across the spectacular Skyway Bridge. Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Toni Schuck was sitting in her cruiser, monitoring the crowd and 275. That’s when a call came that would change her life, and save the lives of countless runners and spectators who was perched on the bridge with no way to escape.
The radio report said a car had just slammed through the barricade at the base of the bridge and was headed toward the massive crowd. Trooper Shuck had one chance to save lives, even if it meant ending her own. That’s when her true character emerged. As the vehicle raced toward her at over 100 mph, she pointed her cruiser directly into the path of the car. Read that again. There’s video of the crash, and it’s terrifying, often bringing the viewer to tears, including myself. Shuck was truly the last line of defense between a suspected drunken driver and thousands of people, and she never blinked. Before the crash ended, she had successfuly stopped a terrible situation from happening. One person, sitting in her car, facing death head-on had changed the course of history. If you’re looking for a true hero, here you go. At the Patriot awards, where she was thanked for her heroic efforts, Shuck told the crowd that her actions were simply part of her job.
Now, Trooper Shuck’s actions are being honored, as she drives the lead patrol vehicle in this year’s run. Officials with the Skyway 10k say additional security will be added to the event from this year forward, keeping the race safe. This year’s run will benefit the Armed Forces Families Foundation, which is a non-profit organization located here in Clearwater. Last year’s run generated just over $250,000 for charity, most of which was directed toward military charities. The orthbound side of the skyway Bridge will be closed beginning at 3:30 am on Sunday and will remain closed until 11 am. The southbound side of the bridge will remain open throughout the run. also, considering the daylight savings time change occurs on Sunday morning, please plan accordingly. runners are asked to show up about an hour before they are scheduled to run.
