Zito’s Beer of the Week: Irish Red

By now, you think we would have found the perfect beer. Well, we will never stop looking because what’s the fun in that? Nothing get’s me more excited than kicking back after work and popping the top off a cold one. So if I am sitting around drinking a beer, then I might as well tell you if you Chug It! or Pour it Out! This week we go back to one I feel like I forgot about, and it’s a George Killian Irish Red. It was a blast to the past almost when I took the swig, so let’s get to this weeks Beer of the Week: Irish Red.

So the. Irish Red has pretty long history, in 1864 a man wanted to drink beer from with his friends and so he started brewing in his backyard. Now the beer gets its name from the color it has, obviously, when you pour it in to a glass its got a soft red color and light foam. This beer has very little head. If you are fan of brandy this is actually a good beer because it has such a smooth flavor that made it go down so easy.

So should you Chug It! or Pour it Out! Well you should Chug It! This was a blast to the past, I almost felt like I was enjoying a beer with some friends. It went down smooth and by the time I finished the 6 pack I was feeling the right amount of buzz. I felt like I could take on another if I wanted but wasn’t to far gone to want to fight someone for it. Chug It! guys its worth grabbing this beer at the local store and getting some friends together for anything really.

  Sitting back, I twisted the top off, and on the first sip, I was surprised. It was smooth and refreshing. I felt like I was enjoying one of the traditional beers. This had a holiday vibe for a seasonal beer without having to blast me with Pumpkin or wintergreen. It was pretty filling, in fact, too. Kicking back the 6 pack, I felt my money was well spent. In the end, I was relaxed and ready to buy another box. All this being said, it gets the Chug It!

  All this said and done this beer officially gets the first Pour It Out! For something that looks like a islanders dream I just didn't feel anything special about it. Knowing what I know now I wouldn't bother to pick this up to the shelf even though it's got a decent price to it. it needs something else to stand out as a lager but what that is I don't know. So if you are looking at Longboards on the shelf Pour It Out!

  It went down easy as it poured into my mug, which was what set it over for me. I didn't feel that urge to wince when you take a big swig of other beers, but I felt relaxed and refreshed. Some say it's got a citrusy taste that is noticeable, but I felt you could taste the grains of it. It was nice, like enjoying a higher-class beer without paying high-class prices. This is your light beer, too; you can drink quite a few, feel a buzz, and keep chugging like a champ. Therefore this beer gets my Chug It! seal of approval!

  As much fun as it would be to continue grieving my producer, he is on the mark with these IPAs. Most have an alcohol content level of 7% ABV (alcohol by volume). Like last week's pick, this one is packed with citrus flavors and has a soft citrus orange taste. In their words, the Neon Bear Hug is "AN ELECTRIC BOUQUET OF TROPICAL & CITRUS FLAVORS." Unfortunately, I think you didn't taste that much of the citrus. It honestly felt like it was a Miller Light of IPA's you barely notice it's an IPA  but your drinking it because it's cheap. It wasn't bad, I didn't feel the urge to chuck the can out immediately, but I didn't feel like it was something I would go out of my way on.  If I had to guess, I would say it's probably the cheaper of the Goose Island chain to make, but it still got me buzzed after a few more than the Voodoo Vice. So added with the taste and the price, this one gets my Chug It! So pick up a cheap pack and tell your friends they are drinking the finest craft beers.

  The first beer on this list is one I didn't think would ever be on my list. Voodoo Vice. IPAs are usually bitter, and you can fill up on just 2 if you're not wearing your big boy pants. Voodoo Ranger can be like that too but what makes this one different is that its citrus smooth. It's really smooth and let me tell you I get about 3 in, and I feel like it's going to be a good night. I mean it's 7.1% on total alcohol content. Overall, this beer gets my Chug It seal of approval!
