Florida Is Home To The “World’s First Graffiti Museum”
Art Basel in Miami will be extra special for the Museum of Graffiti this year. The one-0f-a-kind organization will be partaking in the exhibit with an extensive schedule of unique events, they will also be celebrating their fourth anniversary.
A simple Google search using the words “graffiti” and “museum” will generate results that align to a car museum in California, but more prominently, a unique establishment located at NW 26th Street in the Wynwood district Miami.
What Is The Museum of Graffiti?
In short, it is what it sounds like. “The Museum of Graffiti exhibits, educates, and celebrates the thousands of graffiti artists who have transformed walls in our public spaces into vibrant masterpieces,” they explain. This museum opened in 2019. Furthermore, through this specific artform they aim to inspire creativity for the graffiti movement.
The museum is open seven days per week starting at 11am. On the weekends it stays open until 7 pm (weekdays 6 pm). What you will find here is a combination of paying tribute to the history and roots of graffiti art, and an inside look as to where this style is going.
“The Museum experience includes an indoor exhibition space, eleven exterior murals, a fine art gallery, and a world-class gift shop stocked with limited edition merchandise and exclusive items from the world’s most talented graffiti artists,” they state.
Inside, there are various exhibitions. Some of them vary and feature special guest artists. For example, MEAR ONE’s exhibit entitled “Metaphysical Surrealism” is part of a new launch taking place on December 6. Other exhibits within the space include a tribute to how the world of comics inspires graffiti art, and a look at major graffiti spots around the world.
Art Basel
Next week however, in addition to the anniversary cheers, the Museum of Graffiti will have a big presence at Art Basel. They will feature new releases from acclaimed artists such as MEAR ONE and Atomik. Furthermore, the Museum of Graffiti will partake in talks with renowned artists and host signings throughout the weekend.
