Kanye West Documentary & Podcast In The Works At BBC
A documentary and eight-part podcast about Kanye West is in the works at BBC, according to Deadline. The working title for the documentary is We Need to Talk About Kanye. It will explore his 2024 presidential campaign. It will also address his anti-semitic rants, which led to several companies dropping their partnership with the rapper.
The documentary will follow journalist Mobeen Azhar, who is fronting the project, as he “attempts to understand the complex journey that led the singer to become one of the most famous and creatively successful artists of his generation.” The award-winning journalist previously worked on the U.K. broadcaster’s Battle for Britney doc.
We Need to Talk About Kanye will be accompanied by an eight-part podcast series titled The Kanye Story. The documentary and podcast at this time do not have an anticipated start date at this time.
News of the upcoming documentary and podcast follows another project about West that was put on hold in October 2022 by MRC Entertainment. Ye’s constant anti-semitic rants on social media led MRC to put the project on hold.
MRC gave a statement to Variety: “This morning, after discussion with our filmmakers and distribution partners, we made the decision not to proceed with any distribution for our recently completed documentary about Kanye West,” the memo read. “We cannot support any content that amplifies his platform. Kanye is a producer and sampler of music. Last week he sampled and remixed a classic tune that has charted for over 3,000 years — the lie that Jews are evil and conspire to control the world for their own gain.”
In 2022, Netflix released a three-part documentary on Ye that followed his rise to success. Jeen-Yuhs earned a nomination for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards.
