Independent Bar In St Pete To Close Next Month After 17 Years
Those who bar hop in Downtown St. Petersburg are probably familiar with the Independent Bar. The staple craft beer hotspot is closing its doors after 17 years of business. The bar’s owner announced on social media on Saturday, September 17 that after six years in the ‘Burg’s Edge District, they will be permanently closing after last call on October 2nd.
The Independent Bar has been through quite a roller coaster since first opening in 2005. After the grand opening, it was considered to be St. Petersburg’s Original Craft Beer Bar. The local pub then closed in 2012 and reopened in their current location in October 2016.
Bar owner Veronica Danko wrote in the Facebook post breaking the bad news: “This amazing place will forever have a place in our hearts, and we will always appreciate the community that has supported us.” Heartbroken comments from Independent regulars flooded the social posts. Needless to say that this legendary local hangout will be missed.
Local beer lovers can still get their Independent fix across the bridge. Their sister businesses, The Independent Bar’s Seminole Heights location and Florida Avenue retailer The Jug & Bottle Dept., will not be affected.
There’s still time to get one last beer at the Independent before it closes its doors for good. They claim their last two weeks will be full of love, live music and celebration. The final day, October 2nd, will still host their weekly Sunday Jazz Project featuring James Suggs, Sandi Grecco and Mark Moultrup.
