Gigantic Great White Shark Pings Off Sarasota Coast
Everyone knows that Florida is notorious for their beautiful beaches in the U.S. but they are also known for sharks. Most of these gorgeous beaches are also recognized for being the most dangerous! One great white shark is currently enjoying the spring break season right off the coast of Sarasota County. The great white shark known as “Rose” surfaced on March 5, and is currently moving up and down the east coast.

According to WFLA, the female shark appeared close to the West Florida Escarpment. This is known as a massive underwater cliff which is located about 150-200 miles off the coast. It seems that Rose is currently on vacation because she visited Florida’s Gulf coast this time last year. Right when scientists tagged Rose initially in 2020, she was 10 feet, five inches long and weighed 600 pounds. This might sound like a lot but most great white sharks can grow up to 20 feet long. It’s since been 1,249 days since Rose was tagged, and in that time she has travelled 15,455 miles. Another massive great white has also appeared, nicknamed Penny. She has also pinged off the coast of Sarasota in January and was last seen off Big Pine Key on Feb. 8.
According to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF), 41 of 57 confirmed shark attack cases worldwide were reported in the United States. Out of those 41 cases, 16 were in Florida. This is the most attacks of any other state or any single place. The total number of shark attacks are down from the average 70 from the previous 5 years, but some are concerned that Volusia County. It has become the new shark hot spot where 44 percent of attacks have been recorded.
There is a some Silver lining when it comes to Florida and shark attacks. Of the five fatal bites recorded in 2022, none were registered in the state of Florida, but rather in Egypt, South Africa, and Hawaii. America is on pace to be the nation with most shark bites worldwide reporting 23 of 42 attacks this year. There also has already been 7 fatal attacks, but with 3 coming out of Australia and 2 from Egypt.
