It’s always awful to get rejected from a job. However, sometimes it’s much worse than others. Can you imagine being rejected by an icon? Especially over something as crazy as this! A rejection letter sent by Walt Disney in 1938 is going viral online.
Clearly, a lot has changed since 1938. Animation is different, technology is different, and the way we see women in the workplace is different.
Rejection Letter Sent By Walt Disney In 1938 Goes Viral
The rejection letter sent by Walt Disney highlights how women were treated back in the 30s. It’s pretty weird to see because it really wasn’t that long ago! Like, our grandmothers had to go through this. Regardless of merit or talent, women were often not even considered for jobs back then based solely on being women.
The controversial letter is address to a “Miss Ford” who it looks like applied for a job in the US film producer’s inking and painting department, per Indian Express.
The shocking letter reads, “Women do not do any of the creative work in connection with preparing the cartoons for the screen, as that work is performed entirely by young men. For this reason, girls are not considered for the training school.” Wow. That would definitely not fly today. It’s wild that women wouldn’t even be considered for these types of jobs simply because they were reserved for men.
Imagine how much better art and films would have been back then if they allowed anyone and everyone to work on them. Obviously, people online were not having it. Some people called out the tautology of the decision. Another commenter was able to find the silver lining saying, “Times have changed. These days you might not even get a response if you’re not hired,” as pointed out by Indian Express.

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
