Pauly Shore: See Comedian as Richard Simmons in New Short Film
Paul Shore is starring in a new short film as Richard Simmons, and the short is set to make its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 19.
Below is the teaser trailer for The Court Jester. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Shore explains the plot centers around Simmons appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in the early 2000s and interacting with “a bumbling kind of PA on the set, and he’s a little bit overweight and he’s kind of getting in the way of everyone.”
Visual comparisons between Shore and Simmons have been going around the internet for many years. The comedian/actor really caught wind of the comparisons when he released a series of workout videos on YouTube. He aptly titled the videos Sweatin with the Wiez. This, of course, is a nod to Simmons’ iconic workout video series Sweatin to the Oldies.
Shore admits he thinks he does look like the fitness personality. Additionally, Shore feels like their personality are very similar as well, in that they are both very over-the-top people.
While The Court Jester is currently a short film, Shore is hopeful that it will lead to an eventual feature-length film about Simmons’ life and career.
As for Simmons, he declined to be involved in the making of The Court Jester. Shore remains hopeful that he could get involved if this short film leads to the making of a feature film. He noted to Entertainment Weekly that his decision to keep a low profile lately has nothing to do with being sick, from his understanding, and that Simmons “just wants to chill.”
“Richard Simmons was a very, very, very special man, and he had a huge message,” said Shore. “And I think that message now is even bigger than it was back then.”
