Oxford’s 2023 Word Of The Year Might Need An Explanation
It’s the biggest day of the year for the Oxford Dictionary. They have just named their Word Of The Year for 2023. This year, the word of the year is: Rizz.
They must have been inspired by internet speak, as you can mark this as a massive victory for Gen Z. “Rizz” is derived from the word “charisma.” It refers to a person’s ability to attract members of the opposite sex through their style, charm, or swag.
Rizz Is The Word Of The Year
According to CNN, the word received more than 32,000 votes from the public. Majority of which we can assume are under the age of 30.
“Rizz” became popular slang earlier this year after Spider-Man star Tom Holland was asked about the secret to his rizz. He responded with, “I have no rizz whatsoever. I have limited rizz.” That’s the kind of thing a guy oozing rizz would say, if you ask me.
Oxford English Dictionary’s publisher said the word can also be used as a verb. Like, “to rizz up,” meaning to chat a person up or flirt with them.
In order to be named the word of the year, the word must have significance to the year in question. Prior to 2023, I have never heard of rizz so I think it fits in that criteria.
According to CNN, Oxford University Press said words in its shortlist for 2023 were picked to “reflect the mood, ethos, or preoccupations of the year.”
Previous Winners Of Word Of The Year
In 2023, eight words made the shortlist to be voted on. Other finalists include: prompt, situationship, and Swiftie. In 2022, Oxford’s word of the year was “goblin mode.” In case you haven’t heard of it, it’s a term for behavior that is unapologetically lazy. Clearly, the list is heavily influenced by America’s youth.
As pointed out on Dave And Chuck The Freak today, Oxford University Press has to be bummed about the words that keep winning word of the year. These have to be some intelligent distinguished people, and the highlight of their year and word is “rizz.” You’d think they’d prefer a long word with some kind of scientific meaning. Or at least something smart in some sort of way. Sorry, smarties! The internet wins this one yet again.
