Nicholas Hoult to Play Lex Luthor in ‘Superman: Legacy’
James Gunn is rounding out his cast for his Superman reboot for the new phase of the DCEU. According to Deadline, several sources told the publication that Nicholas Hoult is set to portray the Man of Steel’s arch nemesis Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy. As we reported back in June, the co-chief of DC Studios and the writer/director of the film cast leads David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane after months of audition tapes and in-person screen tests.
Hoult was one of the actors who was reportedly in the running for the titular role, but ultimately was picked to play Luthor, the industry titan with a bald head and an obsessive fixation on Superman. The English actor first gained recognition in the Skins television series before landing a major role in 2011’s X-Men: First Class. In recent years, he starred in the Hulu comedy-drama series The Great and 2023’s The Menu. His upcoming projects include starring in Clint Eastwood’s legal thriller Juror #2, the animated Garfield film as the voice of Jon, and in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu.

With the actors strike over, Gunn has been busy filling out his cast. He confirmed on social media that María Gabriela de Faría was recently cast as another villain, the Engineer. Following that, he confirmed on Tuesday (November 21) that Skyler Gisondo landed the role of Jimmy Olsen (Daily Planet photojournalist) and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher (Lex Luthor’s mistress and assistant) in Superman: Legacy. He has yet to confirm Hoult as Lex at the time of publication.
Superman: Legacy has been slated for a worldwide release on July 11, 2025. Superman: Legacy kicks off the first project of Gunn’s DC takeover. “It’s not like Superman is going to have exactly the same vibe as a Guardians movie,” Gunn previously said. “It’s actually quite different.” Also included in this new phase in the DCEU, titled “Gods and Monsters,” there will also be a Supergirl film, a Wonder Woman-based HBO Max series, and a sequel to The Batman which will exist outside of the DCEU (it will be labeled as an “Elseworlds” film). There will also be an in-universe Batman film.
