Tampa: Baker Mayfield Had A Great Bye Weekend
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went into their bye week sitting atop the NFC South at 3-1. Having the early off week timed perfectly for their quarterback. Baker Mayfield. He won the Heisman Trophy while playing for the University of Oklahoma and he had a great bye weekend at the Red River Rivalry Game.
To start, his Sooners defeated their rival, #3 University of Texas Longhorns, in an absolute thriller, scoring 34-30. With 17 seconds remaining, Dillon Gabriel hit Nic Anderson in the corner of the end zone for the winning score. This was a nice bounce-back after Oklahoma lost this game last year by an outrageous score of 49-0. Oklahoma has now won four out of the last five games against Texas.
Tulsa World shared Mayfield’s reaction to the winning score. Mayfield was on the field for the game, sporting a shirt with what appears to be an image of him in his Oklahoma #6 jersey. However, prior to the big game, Mayfield was all over the Cotton Bowl and Dallas area, enjoying his Red River weekend.
Getting The Party Started
Mayfield leaned right into the Texas State Fair party for much last week. Who can blame him? In addition to being able to go home (Mayfield is from Austin, TX) at the same time his alma mater is playing a visit, there were also a lot of events in town.
First, Mayfield served some chicken fingers with Texas Longhorns legend Vince Young. Together, they surprised customers at a local Raising Cane’s where they handed out orders. Mayfield posted a highlight video to his Instagram. Next, the kindness continued at a local QuikTrip where Mayfield handed out gift cards to lucky customers who happened to stop by. The gift cards were $45.40, which was the score of the 2016 Oklahoma vs. Texas game that Mayfield played in.
Then, it was time to get the cameras ready. Mayfield was a guest on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show on Friday afternoon. On Saturday’s College GameDay program, Mayfield was the special guest picker on that program as well. This was all prior to the great game.
Now, the Buccaneers will get back to work. They have their biggest test of the year so far with the Detroit Lions coming to town next Sunday. Perhaps it will feature a refreshed Baker Mayfield coming off a memorable bye weekend experience.
