5 Ways To Avoid Sharks at Florida Beaches

It’s that time of year we hear about lots of shark encounters in the news. Videos have gone viral this week of sharks getting a little too close for comfort. This week, one young girl was bitten and a hammerhead in Boca Grande swam right up to the shore.

Sharks are more likely to share space with beach goers this time of year as they like to chow down on tarpon and stingrays. A retired scientist gave these 5 tips to Channel 8 for what to do and not to do to stay safe. [Source: Channel 8]

• Night Swimming

  It was a great REM song, but a terrible idea because after sunset, sharks can't tell you apart from the other food in the ocean.

• Bright Bathing Suits

  Leave those 90s neon bathing suits in storage. Sharks can see them from far away.

• Fishers

  Kind of a no-brainer, but if you see folks fishing, keep away. Let the bait be the bait.
• Jewelry

  Take it off before you get in the water. To sharks, those shiny reflections of the sun trick sharks into thinking you have fish scales.

• Watch For Tarpon

  If you see them, scram. That's what sharks are looking for.
