Memorial Day: Rockers Sound Off on Barbecue Tips
It’s Memorial Day, and most people are either hosting or going to a barbecue, but what makes for a successful Memorial Day barbecue?
WRIF’s Jade Springart asked members of Bad Wolves, Beartooth, Papa Roach, Killswitch Engage and Fever 333 for their barbecue tips, and here’s what they had to say!
Bad Wolves’ Tommy Vext
“You gotta have corn, and you gotta have brisket, but brisket is like a smoker situation. So, you gotta have brisket, and you gotta have some good ribs. I’m not a vegan; I don’t know if you’ve noticed. I thank the animals before I eat them. It makes me feel better.”
Beartooth’s Caleb Shomo
“Grilling tip: Don’t run it too hot. That’s a go-to problem for most people. You try and cook a steak or a burger or chicken or something, and you crank it up as high as it goes. It immediately burns, and it’s not cooked. Don’t do that! Take it down a bit. Stand there for 10-15 minutes. It ain’t gonna kill ya! Just have a couple of cold ones and relax. That’s my grill tip for Memorial Day.”
Papa Roach’s Jacoby Shaddix
“Memorial Day tip for having a killer barbecue: Ribeye steaks, take them out early in the morning and set them on the counter so they become room temperature. That’s important to me. Fire up the grill. You got the pool going in the backyard, the kids are swimming, that whole deal. My wife’s drinking sangria, so she’s loosening up. She got the bikini on now at this point. I got the salt and pepper, and I’m not salt and peppering the ribeyes, because that’s an important situation. That’s all I put on my steak is salt and pepper, and then I’ll put those bad boys on the grill. My kids are cannonballing and having a blast, and I’m listening to music. It’s that simple.”
Papa Roach’s Tony Palermo
“My Memorial Day barbecue grill tip would be just smoke some brisket. Beef brisket is a winner for everyone, unless you’re vegan, and then you don’t count. I’m just kidding!”
Killswitch Engage’s Jesse Leach
“You gotta get quality stuff. If you got quality produce, quality meat, quality whatever, that’s what it is. Spend a little more money on the organic stuff. It’s a huge difference, trust me. Get the good stuff. Spend the extra dollars…Probably not going to do anything [this Memorial Day.] If anything, I’m going to find a waterfall, smoke some weed, go swimming and do nothing. That’s probably what I’m going to do.”
Fever 333’s Stephen Harrison
“Look, if you’re having a barbecue, you need ribs, and you need to season them. Like, the sauce is so important, but you need to make sure you…you need spice! You need that, and you need sweet tea. Without those two things, it’s not a barbecue, and I’m not showing up.”
