Tampa Bay Buccaneers Will Gholston Was Homeless Until Drafted

When we look at our favorite players in the world of professional sports, we often don’t think about how their lives were growing up.  You see pictures of your favorite sports celebrities vacationing and living it up on Instagram. Life wasn’t always champagne and limousines for some of these people.

One of those people is Tampa Bay Buccaneer William Gholston.  The Bucs defensive end grew up in Detroit and life wasn’t easy for him.  Will said he was homeless from the time he was 12 years old until the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected him in the 4th round with the 126th draft pick.  He went on to say that he would stay with friends, other relatives, and even in his car.  His mother and father had jobs and they were not homeless. But they didn’t have the means to take care of him with his other siblings living in the house.  He grew up with an older brother and two sisters.

Will said he ate when he could and also credits his mentors and coaches for helping him through those difficult times.  He did mention that his father was one of his mentors who coached him early in his youth but passed away in 2016.  It was athletics that provided Will with some of the basic essentials that he needed at the time.  He said it was because of sports that he had a place to stay and food to eat.

Gholston, also known as “The Ghost”, said when he was younger, he did harbor some resentment but says the past hasn’t really affected him or his siblings negatively today.   His mother has now moved from Detroit to the Tampa Bay area and considers her “a very close friend”.  From humble beginnings to Super Bowl champion.  Check out this inspirational story in its entirety by clicking here.

Jeff Zito or just "Zito" as he is known to his friends, was born in Summit, NJ. Zito is the afternoon personality and program director of 987 the Shark. He has been with Beasley Media Group since 1999. Zito aspired to be a professional golfer and attended Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI majoring in PGM (pro golf management). Yes, that is a real major! After college, Zito was an assistant golf professional at the Meadows Country Club in Sarasota. Zito is an avid Bucs fan who likes to paddle board and can sometimes be spotted around the Bay area drinking a margarita.
