Best Buy Has Officially Stopped Selling CDs
As of July 1, Best Buy has stopped selling CDs in their retail stores.
According to Consequence of Sound, only 89 Million CDs were purchased in 2017, and physical music itself has only generated $40 million. Best Buy will continue to shell out vinyl along with their turntables.
Best Buy isn’t the only retailer that is backing off on the sale. According to Billboard, Target has been asking for CDs to be sold on a “consignment basis.” They take an inventory risk, agreeing to pay for goods that ship within 60 days, but the unsold will be shipped back for credit toward the next batches.
With Best Buy and Target moving away from carrying physical CDs, and Toys ‘R’ Us going out of business, there’s not much more left that is part of the good ol’ brick and mortar days.
