Did A Fire Station Burn Down Because It Didn’t Have Smoke Alarms?
Did a fire station burn down because it didn’t have smoke alarms? That’s what it’s sounding like!
Of all places that should definitely have a smoke alarm, you would think it would be the fire station! Unfortunately, it sounds like this fire station in Stadtallendorf, Germany didn’t have them installed, or at least not yet because the station just opened 10 months ago. Not having smoke alarms in your home is a major safety concern. Not having them inside a fire station is no different!
Fire Station Burns Down Because It Didn’t Have Smoke Alarms
According to Firehouse.com, a new fire station in Stadtallendorfy (Marburg-Biedenkopf) was destroyed by a fire this week that quickly spread from an apparatus and thick clouds of smoke were seen from far distances away. The flames reportedly blazed more than 10 meters high off the roof of the fire station. Firehouse.com reports a decision was made by the city not to have fire alarms in the bay as there is no legal requirement for a fire alarm system in a fire station. One might think that they have everything they need to handle the situation if one were to break out, but you still need to be alerted to it while you still have time! Shouldn’t every building have a smoke detector? How much are they like $30?
District Fire Inspector Lars Schafer tells Firehouse.com, “This is every firefighter’s nightmare. No one ever wants to have to put out their own fire station.” There were roughly 170 firefighters involved in the operation, per reports. It sounds like they tried their hardest but were unable to save the vehicle hall and it ended up being completely destroyed. Thankfully, the adjacent social rooms of the building were protected from the flames.
Now, this presents several problems for the fire station and the community. Firehouse.com reports that the fire means not only a severe financial loss which has to be a lot of money but also a temporary restriction of fire protection in the city center. That means even more problems could come out of it if a fire were to break out in the area. The cause of the fire remains unclear and thankfully no one was injured during the fire.
I can’t understand why a fire station wouldn’t have smoke alarms. You’re the model of fire safety! You should be the first ones with it, there should be one on every wall! This is not a good look.
