‘Suni and the Seven Princesses’ Are A Grandma Rap Group In South Korea
Have you heard of Suni and the Seven Princesses? They’re a rap group in South Korea and they’re all over the age of 80!
How awesome is that? These could be the coolest grandmas on earth. They even dress up in hip-hop attire and totally rock it. It’s not just that though. They reportedly learned to read and write in their 80s and now they’re taking their newly developed skills and using them to rap! Meet Suni and the Seven Princesses!
Who Are Suni and the Seven Princesses?
Usually on Dave & Chuck The Freak, if we’re talking about a group of grandmas then it might have something to do with them crashing into a building or getting into a fight in some viral video. I don’t think we’ve ever talked about a group of rapping grandmas and that’s what we have here with Suni and the Seven Princesses. Think they’re looking for a collab with MC Mayo? We know it would be his dream come true.
According to the Associated Press, the average age in the group is 85 and that means they’re likely the oldest rap group in all of South Korea. It would be really hard to beat that number. Now, they seem to be taking over and growing in popularity. It all started with them learning how to read and write in their 80s, as they were born at a time where women were marginalized in education so they never got to learn how to read and write before. Now, they aren’t letting their skills go to waste!
It started with them dabbling with poetry and eventually turned into them performing raps. That’s some awesome evolution and cool that they stuck with it and found new ways to express their creativity. They’re now getting really famous in South Korea and have appeared in commercials and gone viral on social media. They even reportedly received a congratulatory message from South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo!
Member of the group Park Jeom-sun, 82, says the group typically practices 2 or 3 times a week but it will be even more if they’re getting ready for a show. Park tells AP News, “During and after the Korean War, I couldn’t study because of the social atmosphere, but I started learning Hangeul in 2016. Being introduced to rap while learning Hangeul has made me feel better, and I thought it would help me stay healthy and avoid dementia.” They seem like the greatest thing ever!
