Florida Boaters Rescued While Hanging On Buoy
Living in Florida is quite badass. We have access to great seafood, lots of beautiful beaches and miles and miles of blue ocean to explore. But boating has its risks. bad weather can sneak up on you quickly. Boats can experience mechanical failures or even worse, they can sink in open water. That’s excatly what happened over the weekend near Egmont Key, a small island near south of St. Pete. Authorties with the U.S. Coast Guard say three boaters were enjoying their day on the water when their 24-foot boat began to take on water. They managed to get a report in to the CG before abandoning it and swimming toward a buoy that was close by. The boat sank and will need to be salvaged. The Coast Guard dispatched a 45-foot rescue boat for the operation after they received a report of a vessel taking on water. By the time the rescue boat arrived, the victims had located a buoy near Egmont Key and climbed onto it and waited for rescue. All three men were in good health wih no injuries. The United States Coast Guard reminds all boaters to wear safety vests and always keep all required safety equipment on board. They say it’s also a good idea to file a float plan, letting others know exactly where you expect to be and when. National Safe Boating Week started over the weekend, too. Several safety events are scheduled to happen over the next seven days. Source: TampaBay.com
