HUGE Gasoline Theft Ring Busted in Apollo Beach and Ruskin
While it was obviously illegal, the plan was straight out of a James Bond movie. According to TampaBay.com, police say thieves devised a plan to steal thousands of gallons of gas while remaining undetected back in February.
Here’s how the plan worked. Seven separate trucks used elaborate pump systems that were able to fill huge bladders in the beds without being charged for it.
The scam replaced specific components in the gas pump with homemade gadgets that fooled the pump into thinking no gas had been pumped. The contraption was built from a block of wood, a steering rod, a car battery and a small electronic circuit board.
Once the trucks were filled with the stolen gasoline, they were taken to another location, where it was dumped into a special reservoir. The fuel would later be sold at a discount rate.
The first theft of gas was reported by a Circle K after they discovered $25,000 worth of gas was missing. The crimes took place in Apollo Beach and Ruskin.
Police have arrested and charged six men so far, but they say the investigation continues.
