Having roommates can be tough. That’s even true when your roommate is your mother. You might feel like you have a lack of privacy. You might even feel like you don’t have to clean up after yourself. However, that doesn’t make it true! So, why did this ex-USMMA student kill his mom?
According to The New York Post, an ex-US Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) student has a trial coming up for allegedly strangling his mother after she handed him an eviction notice that requested he find a job and keep his room and common areas of their home clean. It doesn’t sound like she was asking for too much! Those are basic principles and rules for living with someone. Unfortunately, he seems to have thought those requests were a bit too much.
The New York Post reports that Conner Kobold, 20, admitted to the crime as soon as police arrived at the scene at the Valparaiso, Indiana home he shared with his mother, Shanelle Burns. According to The New York Post, Kobold reportedly told officers that he “killed somebody” before directing them where they could locate his mother who was clinging to life prior to him requesting to be handcuffed.

Burns was rushed to the hospital with ligature marks on her neck and suspected brain damage from the alleged strangulation, according to The New York Post. Two days later, she passed away due to her injuries.
The USMAA did not confirm whether he was kicked out of the school or dropped out on his own accord. However, The New York Post does report that he has a history of mental illness and previously told a judge that he had been an inpatient in 2 mental health facilities and has also seen 5 different therapists.
It seems like despite the issues he was going through, his mother loved him through it all. According to The New York Post, her obituary heartbreakingly says that Conner was “the most important thing in her accomplished life.”
Kobold has pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated battery and murder relating to his mother’s death. You can see his mugshot below provided by the Porter County Jail.
