New Movie Theater Opens at Tampa’s University Mall with 10 Screens, Made-to-Order Food
Sun-Ray Cinema is opening its doors December 11 at Tampa’s University Mall. Moving into the old Look Dine-In Cinema location, the theater takes up 50,000 square feet and includes 10 screens plus a huge 4,000-square-foot kitchen. Though three theaters have failed at this spot since 2013, owners Tim and Shana David-Massett are trying something different. They’re mixing big upcoming releases like “Wicked” and “Moana 2” with hand-picked indie films.
Customers can order food at the counter before their movie starts, and staff bring it right to their seats. For drinks, people can pop out to refill stations in the lobby during the show. The kitchen team makes everything from scratch, even rolling out their own pizza dough.
“So we have a menu that’s really thoughtful in terms of what makes sense to eat in the theater. And again, it will be done fresh,” said David-Massett.
The renovated building fixes a lot of old issues. They’ve put in new seats and upgraded the sound system to replace old equipment that many customers had complained about. Opening night features “Nosferatu” with live music accompaniment. Local Jacksonville artist Jason Wright has created some eye-catching artwork for the entrance, adding character to the updated space. The theater is part of the growing RITHM@Uptown development. Previous theaters shut down here after getting slammed with bad reviews over poor service.
The owners think they can buck the trend of failed chain theaters in this location by keeping prices reasonable, using quality ingredients, and staying personally involved in day-to-day operations.
