15 WWE Wrestlers You Might Recognize When AEW Debuts in Tampa

Author Geno
July 11th 12:13 PM

Pro wrestling has a deep history in Tampa. Old time rasslin’ fans will remember the days when Dusty Rhodes had crowds going wild at The Armory long before there was ever a WrestleMania. Fans of the 80’s got to see Clearwater’s Hulk Hogan take the popularity of pro wrestling to a new level. And even in the past decade, many of the stars you see now on Monday Night Raw got their training and reps in at a little warehouse on Dale Mabry before NXT was created in Orlando.

Now a new challenger to Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Entertainment has emerged. AEW (All Elite Wrestling) debuted a few years ago up in Jacksonville. Wrestlers who were unhappy with the direction pro wrestling was going in created a new league and eventually landed a TV deal with TNT and TBS.

The owner has deep pocked and has recruited many familiar WWE stars. It’s reminiscent of when Ted Turner got the checkbook out and brought Hulk Hogan, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and other WWF stars to boost his World Championship Wrestling ratings. The new Ted Turner is Tony Khan. He’s the son of the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

For longtime WWE fans, you’ll recognize a lot of familiar faces even if you haven’t watched AEW yet. Some have had to change their names because they are owned by WWE. But here are 15 of the more recognizable faces you might see when Tony Khan’s AEW makes its Tampa debut at USF at the Yuengling Center August 2.

  • Sting

    Share

He's 64 years old and still wrestling. Steve Borden has been in the game for decades, most memorably as Ric Flair's rival back in the 1980s NWA.

  • Paige

    Share

Now going by her real first name, Saraya, this English wrestler was well known outside of pro wrestling as she took part in an E! reality TV show that followed the lives of WWE female pro wrestlers.

  • Matt & Jeff Hardy

    Share

Jeff's had his share of troubles over the years with addiction but seems to be back in good health, reteaming with his brother Matt.

  • CM Punk

    Share

Probably the most familiar face to WWE fans will be CM Punk. He had a brief run with UFC but returned to wrestling a year or so ago where he's had some real life issues backstage with other AEW wrestlers.

  • Rusev

    Share

The Bulgarian is now going by Miro, a shortened version of his real first name Miroslav.

  • Dean Ambrose

    Share

Another former WWE wrestler that had to come up with a new name after leaving the company, he now goes by his real first name Jon. Moxley was a name he went by before his WWE run.

  • Dustin Rhodes

    Share

Best known as his wild WWF character in the 90s Goldust, the son of Dusty Rhodes is now 54.

  • Billy Gunn

    Share

One of the few former WWE wrestlers who got to keep his name, the 59 year old is still at it. And if you don't like that, he's got two words for ya. Tough luck.

  • Chris Jericho

    Share

Even if you never watched him on WWE or WCW, Tampa concert goers often see Chris in the crowd.

  • Ruby Riot

    Share

Now 32, she now wrestles under the name "Ruby Soho."

  • Cesaro

    Share

Another one who had to change his name. He now goes by his real name Claudio Castagnoli.

  • Big Cass

    Share

Now just known as "Big Bill" (his real name is William Morrissey), this dude is 6'10"!

  • Samoa Joe

    Share

A long time independent wrestler, fortunately he didn't have to change his name to the legal one on his driver's license: Nuufolau Seanoa.

  • Daniel Bryan

    Share

Now performing under his real name Bryan Danielson, the former WWE champ has taken on a bad guy persona.

  • Christian Cage

    Share

WWE fans remember him as Christian. AEW probably added the last name Cage to thwart off WWE lawyers.

OK... I lucked out big time. Ticket prices plummeted the week of the show so we got 4th row ringside behind the announcers! My producer Chuck and I are ready to rumble! Or drink beer and watch pro wrestling.
