Man Gets Flesh Eating Bacteria in Florida Canal
A North Fort Myers man is fighting a bacterial infection after swimming in what we all know to be such clean canal water. Kurt Holthus said he went outside to clean his dock and ended up in the emergency room. Hurricane Ian has left toxins in the Southwest Florida waterways. Holthus wore protective gear and still managed to catch the ick. Even with his face shield, the water got underneath it and hit him in the mouth. Holthus says he then ran inside to wash his face and mouth after coming in contact with the algae.
A little while later Holthus said he started getting red patches on his skin. Doctors said it was Vibrio vulnificus. Holthus is feeling much better now. He has sent warnings about the water dangers. The Florida Department of Health website lists one reported case of Vibrio vulnificus in Lee County so far this year. [Source NBC2]
