Eye Doctor Removed 23 “Forgotten” Contact Lenses From Patient

If you wear contact lenses, you should know not to sleep with them in. And most people don’t. But if you’re wondering why, just check out the Instagram account of California Eye Associates.

Dr. Katerina Kurteeva says last month she removed “a few contact lenses” from the eye of a patient. By “a few,” we’re talking about 23 of them. The elderly patient had apparently “forgotten” about them, and the doctor suspects that a couple of the lenses may’ve been lodged in the upper part of her eyeball for years. Katerina Kurteeva, MD on Instagram: "A rare occasion in my practice - I got to deliver 23 contact lenses yesterday from one patient's eye in my clinic. 23 CONTACT LENSES REMOVED - this is an opportunity for me to review contact lens wear with the public: 1. Get proper initial fitting and contact lens handling training when first getting them. 2. Always wash your hands before taking them out and placing them in. 3. Dispose of your daily contact lenses before going to bed. Use preservative free artificial tears such as Refresh when handling contact lenses. 4. Use proper contact lens storage solution for extended wear contact lenses. 5. If you wear contact lenses and your eye turns red, see your Ophthalmologist or optometrist for an exam to make sure that there is no infection. AND NEVER SLEEP IN YOUR CONTACT LENSES. Call our office if you need an eye exam(949) 760-9007. We are in Newport Beach, CA I have carefully separated all the contact lenses and counted total of 23. I had to use very fine surgical instrument a jeweler forceps to separate contact lenses.
