Kayak Ramp Closes Due To Poo In Water
About two years ago, authorities warned kayakers about fecal matter in a canal that is located near Miami Beach. Investigators say they have tried for the last two years to find the source of the poo water, but they have been unsuccessful so far. The offending gunk in the water is called enterococci fecal bacteria. a while back, a leak was located and fixed, but the high levels remain in the latest testing. As a matter of fact, the levels have never fallen into the safe category for swimming standards for the state of Florida. Now, a specialist has been hired to figure out the problem in a 3-month research project. It’s about time, too. The latest test, performed on July 7th of this year, showed concentrations of about 350 times the allowable limit of fecal contamination. Authorities and local residents are growing more and more frustrated with each failed attampt to fix the problem. Kayakers are unable to use the canal and authorities have no answers. One theory is tht rain introduces fecal matter to the canal after rain storms, but that doesn’t explain the consistently high concentrations. The current plan includes testing of sediment at the bottom of the canal and automatic montiors, which will take samples twice a day over an extended time. One thing is for sure, the problem must be fixed. Source: MiamiHerald.com
