Teen Seriously Injured In Florida Shark Attack A teenage girl is reportedly in serious condition after she was attacked by a shark off the coast of Florida on Thursday.

The incident occurred at about 3 p.m. near Grassy Island in only five feet of water, according to the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office. The teen was scalloping with her family when the nine-foot-long shark attacked, sheriff’s officials say. “A family member reportedly jumped in the water and beat the shark until the juvenile was free,” reads a statement released by the sheriff’s office.

The girl was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she underwent surgery, says sheriff’s rep Gina Deeson. The species of the shark is unknown, Deeson says. Why have more shark attacks occurred in recent years? [Source USA Today]
