A Florida man accused of scamming health insurance companies out of more than $4 million has been captured — while attempting to flee to Cuba on a Jet Ski.
Hialeah resident Ernesto Cruz Graveran, 54, was attempting to make the 90-mile journey to Cuba last week when his Jet Ski stopped working, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The Coast Guard found him sitting on the inoperable vessel just south of Key West, officials say. The Jet Ski had been “outfitted with a special fuel cell to allow for long trips,” according to the Attorney’s Office.
Authorities say Cruz Graveran, who owns a company that provides medical equipment to Medicare beneficiaries, submitted more than $4.2 million in fraudulent claims to Medicare. A judge on Monday ordered that Cruz Graveran be held without bail as he awaits his trial.
