Tampa athletes to compete in the Junior Olympics!

Twenty-five members of the Citrus Park VAST Sports Development Track Team have qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics being held in Houston.

While the Tokyo Olympics currently take place, the Junior Olympics will last from July 28 through August 7. Participants are eligible to compete up to age 18.

Of the 25 members who have qualified, Christian Cleary will compete in the 800-meter sprint, as well as Nia Armstrong and Marvin Pierrelus who will race in the 80-meter hurdles. Armstrong will be competing in the pentathlon which includes long jump, high jump, shot put, 80-meter hurdles and the 800.

Sisters Nyla and Aliyah Gamble who are ages 13 and 9, respectively, will compete for a number of different medals including the challenging race walk. In this unique event, racers must keep one foot on the ground throughout the entire race.

Coach Sherman Armstrong leads the group of young athletes at VAST. The facility trains individuals as young as five years of age all the way up to adult professionals.

1997-2001. In his time as a college athlete he was named Big Ten Athlete of the year in 2000 and a four-time NCAA all-American.

VAST Sports Performance, located in West Tampa, is home to specialists that train in improving:

  • Agility
  • Strength
  • Deceleration
  • Core strength
  • Position Specific Speed

Although local Tampa athletes will be competing in Track & Field events at the Junior Olympics, sports included are wrestling, field hockey, karate, swimming, taekwondo, baton twirling, field hockey, and pickle ball.
