Here’s When Tampa Will Get The COVID-19 Vaccine
We seem to be coming down to the wire now. You’re probably hearing lots of rumors about the vaccine, who will get it, and when. As of this morning, the FDA expects to have 2 million doses available for Floridians before the end of December. The first doses will be made available to residents of nursing homes and people over 65 with health issues. Generally speaking, the more dire your need, the more quickly you will be inoculated. Young and healthy people should expect their shots as late as June of 2021. The main logistical problem is getting enough vaccinations quickly. Although several manufacturers will be in charge of making the doses, the sheer numbers are staggering and we’ve never dealt with such an undertaking in the modern age. A major hurdle at this point is approval of the Moderna and Pfizer versions of the vaccine. When that happens, the wheels of progress should kick in rapidly. Another issue is people who would not choose to take the vaccine. Those people can still contract and transmit the virus to others. Experts say 70% of the population will have to be vaccinated for the pandemic to stop. Pfizer’s vaccine will be up for approval with the FDA on December 10th, while Moderna’s version will be submitted for approval on December 17th. Once they gain approval, the companies say they can begin distribution within 24 hours. – Sean Roberts
